Prompt: The Importance of Names
Story: Upcoming Project with Alexandra O’Mackey
Summary: Alex and Gabe O’Mackey debate over the name for the unborn daughter. This won’t feature in the story itself, when I post it, but I guess it’s still kind of spoilery. Maybe. I did have good intentions when it came to Myshuno, and planned to get more done...c'est la vie, I guess!
Word Count: 330

Gabe looked up from the baby name book he’d been leafing through for the past hour, and glanced at his wife. She had been looking out the window at the snow falling over the hills for some time now, but hadn’t said a word. Truthfully, it bothered Gabe.

“Alex,” He called, “We said we’d pick a name tonight. She’ll be here before we know it,”

Alex sighed, and dropped her gaze from the window, slowly moving towards the sofa opposite Gabe, “What names do you like, then?”

Gabe smiled to himself, and looked back down at his book, “I quite like the name Jules,”

“Jules?” Alex questioned, looking up at him, her eyebrows raised, “That’s hardly a name that screams adventure, is it,”

Gabe rolled his eyes, “Alex, we live in the real world, now. We don’t have adventures, and we don’t need to worry about things like that,”

“Oh, so we’re settling down, therefore our daughter’s name will force her to settle down, too,” Alex replied, disgusted, “Jules. That’s a damsel in distress name. The girl left behind. The girl watching her husband sail out to sea on a ship,”

Gabe closed his eyes, and answered her with a tired voice, “Jules is not a settling down name,”

“Our baby needs a name with fire, with potential. Something that sounds powerful,” Alex insisted, “Not some girly soppy name like Jules,”

“Alex,” Gabe said, quietly, “You need to listen to me. Adults live in the real world; they don’t sail off into the sunset, fight pirates, and hunt for treasure…the baby needs a name that she can live with as an ordinary adult,”

Alex studied him for a moment, “Ordinary is boring,”

Gabe remained still as his wife got up from the sofa and headed back to the window. He closed the book and put it back on the end table, choosing to head up to bed rather than talk to Alex.

It was going to be a long night.
