Wrongway Short
Jun. 16th, 2014 06:40 pmI had an idea for a scene with Maddie and one of her kids in the future, so I wrote it. It's a fun little piece, I thought you guys might like to read it! It's a *little* spoilery for a few chapters from now (I'm not sure which one just yet), but it doesn't really give anything away.
--------
“Mum!” The child wailed, entering the house, her brown hair escaping from the plaits Maddie had carefully threaded it into hours earlier, “The cast list was put up today!”
“And?” Maddie asked, expectantly. She had watched her daughter rehearsing for the audition for weeks on end, and knew the girl was talented. Maddie hadn’t even considered a scenario where her daughter didn’t get the lead.
“I’m playing a RAT.” The little girl announced. Maddie studied her daughter for a moment.
“Really? They didn’t make you the piper?” Maddie questioned, furrowing her brow. Her daughter shook her head, dramatically.
“No, they wanted a BOY! I have to play a RAT!” The child promptly burst into tears, and Maddie knelt down and put an arm around her daughter.
“At least you got a part, little one,” Maddie offered. The child sobbed harder.
“EVERYONE got a part!”
Maddie smiled at her daughter, “You’ll be the best rat out of all of them.”
“I will,” The child sniffed, and wiped her face with her sleeve, “And then next time, I’ll get the lead role.”
In some respects, Maddie and her daughter weren’t similar in anyway. But in that moment, Maddie realised her daughter had inherited her fighting spirit, and couldn’t be more proud.
