Building Rubix: Week Three, Thayer
Aug. 2nd, 2012 05:51 pm
Hello again! It's week three for the Thayers! And this would have been posted earlier, but you know, the Olympics are on...and I have been distracted by gymnasts and divers all week. All of the athletes have been amazing so far! And yes, this has nothing to do with the update you're about to read.
On with the update!

"You know, you may not be mine, Titan, but I'm going to do my best for you,"
In case you don't remember, Griff Thayer got abducted prior to meeting his wife, Rose Schweber, in the last rotation. I think it was a piece of luck that we got an alien baby so early on! Rose has always looked a little bewildered by it.

The Thayers are not the most financially stable of families at the minute, but that didn't stop the couple from rolling wants for babies. And I figured, why not? I do like a challenge.
...then I realised there is literally no room in the house at all, not even for Titan.
Man, this is going to be interesting.

The next morning, Griff searched the paper for a job. If his family was growing, he wanted to be able to support it, and with all of the career openings at the moment, he was in luck.
Griff landed a job in Business.

Luckily, his carpool arrived that very morning, so Griff could get started on saving for his family straight away.

Rose, however, was left at home with Titan and the garden. Another way the Thayers were going to save money was by growing their own food. Or possibly selling it, depending on how well-stocked their fridge was.

Only in Rubix is it acceptable to do your gardening in your underwear. It's probably a good thing none of the neighbours have telescopes at this point.

Gardening is long and difficult, and Rose keeps having to stop in order to throw up. Pregnancy isn't being kind to Rose, and it certainly isn't making her life any easier.

Meanwhile, Griff got fired on his first day. Fantastic.
Stupid chance cards.

Determined to replace his role in the Business career, Griff heads straight back to the newspaper, only to find absolutely no suitable vacancies.
It looks like the Thayers are going to have to find money in other ways, at least until someone can secure a job.

"Griff, I don't think you can discover constellations during the day..."
"If I don't try, I won't know,"
"Okay, but if the neighbours come by and slap you, I'm not going to stop them,"

"So I've been thinking," Griff said, quietly, "If one of us becomes a plantsim, that will save money on an extra bed. When Titan grows up, he can have half of the double,"
"But what about the plantsim? We can't afford sun lamps, Griff,"
Griff pulled a face, "We've got to do something! There's next to no money in the bank, and we haven't got the room for Titan to have his own space,"
"We'll work it out somehow," Rose sighed, "Just please, don't try anymore crazy ideas,"

It seems life for the Thayers was only going to get harder, as the pregnancy progressed.
And damn, I thought those jeans had a pregnancy morph.

I'd forgotten just how much attention a garden requires. I've spent the last week reacquainting myself with Seasons (woo! Weather!) but it's funny how quickly you can forget small details.
I am glad to have seasons back, though.

The week continued for the Thayers - things broke, things were fixed, the paper had pretty much no jobs in it, and the baby's arrival kept on coming closer.
Life was about to get very difficult.

But on the brighter side of things, Titan's birthday soon rolled around, which is quite exciting, if you ask me.

Luckily his outfit wasn't bad, because there's no spare cash to change it. Here's hoping Titan will be a very helpful man. Look, he's already helping to keep the place tidy!

"Happy birthday, Titan! I hope you enjoyed it!" Rose smiled at her step-son.
"Yes!" Titan hesitated, "But where am I going to sleep?"

Rose promptly burst into tears, while Titan watched, horrified.
"I wish we could afford to give you your own room, Titan!"

A short while later, Rose and Titan had taken the double, while Griff slept on the sofa, but the peaceful night was interrupted by a new arrival.

That night, the family welcomed a little girl into Rubix. (Hooray!)
This is Jessica Thayer, everyone.

Time moved on. Instead of looking for a job, Griff spent his hours gazing on the neighbours. The Loreens lived right across the street, and it turns out, Griff's high-powered telescope could see through their windows.

That night, the regular routine of keeping the plants happy was interrupted by a transformation...

It seems Griff got what he wanted. Rose Thayer was a plantsim.
Rose, even though she was a Knowledge sim, seemed upset by it all.

Fed up because Griff got exactly what he wanted, Rose decided to make his life a little harder, and spawned up a toddler. Even though they were in this together, Griff had a son that wasn't hers, and now Rose would have a child that wasn't his.

Little Cayenne Thayer was welcomed into the family that night. She didn't need to eat, she didn't need to sleep. As far as Rose was concerned, Cayenne was someone for their daughter, Jessica, to play with.

Speaking of Jessica, the next day was her birthday, and the whole family was around to celebrate.

Jessica takes after Griff, mostly, other than her skin tone.

The kids spent the evening together, enjoying the company and getting to know one another, whilst finding new ways to play peek-a-boo through doors, and keep wolves glitched in place.

The peace didn't last for long. The Thayer's bills continued to be unpaid, and the repo men finally came for a visit.

He took a counter, and that was it, but the counter did not get replaced.

Later that day, the harvest began. And it was terrible - the first fruits from the Thayer's garden were bland and pale, not worth selling to anyone.
So the family stocked up the fridge, saving their grocery bill for the week.

Cayenne grew up that afternoon, to an age where she was able to help the family earn money.
Well, if that's what she wanted.

After changing her looks, and wondering where on Earth she was going to find room to grow and discover who she was, Cayenne decided to move out and find her own way in Rubix.
We'll catch up with her at the end of the rotation.

And that's it for this week in the Thayer household! I absolutely LOVED playing it! They're so poor it is such a challenge, and I do enjoy a good challenge. I am looking forward to next week with the Thayers!
