“Show me what constellations you know,” Maddie asked, with a smile. She was standing in a graveyard on the edge of town with her date.
Pascal Curious grinned, “You saw my telescope, didn't you?”
“I may have done,” Maddie replied, cheerfully. She cast a look over her shoulder, finding that Vidcund and Lazlo, Pascal's brothers, were occupied by something on the other side of the yard. “Pascal, perhaps we should sneak off? We'd see the stars better somewhere darker.”
“True,” Pascal said, but then he fidgeted, “Only the research is really important...I'm not sure I should be stargazing tonight, I didn't plan for that.”
Maddie shook her head, “Sorry, it was only a suggestion.”
Pascal hugged her, but there was some kind of distance between them. He leaned to her ear, “I love you.”
Maddie left Strangetown a few days later.

“Stars always look so magical, don't they?” Leod McGreggor said, a little breathless. He'd taken Maddie out to one of the fields, with a blanket and a bottle of wine, intending to show her how beautiful Riverblossom was.
“They look the same no matter where you are,” Maddie told him, bluntly, and laid down on the blanket. Leod frowned at her.
“Why do you say that?” He asked, “They look different depending on where you are.”
“Sorry, Leod, I'm not seeing it,” Maddie sighed, “Is this a plan to try and make me stay?”
Hidden by the shadows, Leod's cheeks blushed red, “No, not at all. I know you're planning to move again in a couple of days, I just...I just wish you were staying, Maddie.”
Maddie said nothing, choosing not to move or react to his words. As much as she liked Leod, Maddie didn't want to spend the rest of her days as a farmer's wife.
“Maddie?” Leod said, softly, “I love you.”
Maddie sat up straight. Oh boy, definitely time to move on.

The fire was burning low, and the hour was nearing midnight. Lee and Natasha had long ago retired to their tent, leaving John and Maddie alone with the stars. Maddie rolled her eyes the minute she saw John looking at the sky.
“I swear to Wright, if you try to be romantic using the stars, I will punch you,” Maddie told him, and gave a little laugh when John looked surprised.
“What makes you think I was going to try to romance you, Maddie?” John grinned, folding his arms, “I know you, Maddie. Romance doesn't cut it for you, you prefer things to be straightforward.”
“Wow, you really do know me,” Maddie remarked, surprised. She hadn't felt that anyone had known her, not properly, in a long time. She laid down, and looked at the sky, trying to find love in the stars.
John laid next to her, “You know, Maddie, you know this, but I love you.”
“That does sounds familiar,” Maddie laughed, “Think you're the first boyfriend to take me out under the stars to tell me that?”
John rolled his eyes, “You know I didn't organise this trip just to tell you that, Maddie.”
“Doesn't matter, Mister,” Maddie smiled, “Times have changed, and this time, I love the man with me under the stars.”
“Soppy,” John teased, and the couple kissed. This time, Maddie was going nowhere.
